Cacao Chai Mulled Wine

These dark and cold autumn nights have got us well and truly in the mood for mulled wine! There’s something undeniably magical about a steaming mug of mulled wine — the comforting spices, the rich aromas, the way it wraps you in warmth from the inside out. This version takes the classic to a whole new level, with our Cacao Chai, adding deep notes of roasted cacao and rich chocolate. Perfect for chilly evenings, festive gatherings, or simply treating yourself...

Ingredients (makes 4-5 glasses)

  • 750ml bottle red wine
  • 5 Cacao Chai tea bags (or 5 tablespoons in a strainer)
  • 120ml Cointreau
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 star anise
  • 4 slices of orange
  • 4 Tbsp honey (or brown sugar)

Method

  1. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and give them a quick stir.

  2. Heat on a medium-high heat until it almost reaches a simmer – avoid letting it boil.  Reduce heat to low, put the lid on the pan, and leave to simmer for a minimum of 20 minutes. Ideally give it 2 hours.

  3. Using a sieve or slotted spoon, remove and discard the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, star anise and Cacao Chai tea. Give the mulled wine a taste, and add some extra honey if you like it sweeter.

  4. Serve warm in heatproof glasses (or mugs) and garnish with star anise, cinnamon sticks and a fresh slice of orange.
